Rooney voted top player in England

Manchester United FC forward Wayne Rooney has been voted the Professional Footballers' Association player of the year after topping the poll of his peers.

Rooney, 24, headed a shortlist including Chelsea FC striker Didier Drogba, Manchester City FC frontman Carlos Tévez and Arsenal FC midfielder Cesc Fàbregas. The former Everton player has enjoyed the most prolific season of his career, scoring 26 Premier League goals in 30 appearances and adding another five in the UEFA Champions League.

"I remember coming here in 2005 and 2006 to win the young player of the year award," the England international said. "I saw the players winning the main one and it's something I've aimed for since." In other awards at England's annual prize ceremony, Aston Villa FC midfielder James Milner picked up the PFA young player accolade while ex-Leeds United AFC and South Africa defender Lucas Radebe, 41, took the merit award.
